The Altari Wardens' Council

The Altari, or Makers, are a humanoid species closely related to the Riven. They are the original makers of the Tanu.

Background

Long ago, the Altari lived quietly among humans. Eventually, discord grew between ordinary humans and the Altari, and they went into amicable hiding. Some Altari remained friendly to humans, and gave them Tan'kindi as gifts. But when it was discovered that humans could become Tan'ji as well, a splinter group formed- calling themselves the Kesh'kiri- and attacked the friendly Altari, beginning a civil war.

By the time of The Box and the Dragonfly, only some Altari remain, but most are deep in hiding and refuse to fight in the war.

Trivia

• The Altari are also called the Makers, but in what context this term applies is unclear. Mr. Meister says that "Altari" refers to the original group, before the Riven split off, but the same word is used to refer to modern Altari who appear in the series.
